Yeh-Wei Yu was born in 1980 in Taipei, Taiwan, R. O. C. He received the BS in power mechanical engineering from National Tsing Hua University in 2003. He received his MS and Ph.D. in Optical Sciences from National Central University in Jan. 2005 and Mar. 2009, respectively.

Between 2009 and 2018, Dr. Yu joined Prof. Ching-Cherng Sun’s lab at department of optics and photonics, National Central University as a postdoctoral research associate. In Feb. 2010, he conducted a visiting research of Prof. Vinegoni’s lab in Massachusetts Hospital Harvard University, and thus started the research topic of optical phase conjugational (OPC) scattering-suppression image. In Oct. 2011, he conducted another visiting research in Beijing Tsing University. Over there, he was able to demonstrate the idea of enlarging temperature tolerance of holographic data storage (HDS) system, which was proposed in his doctoral thesis. In the period between 2009 and 2018, Dr. Yu led a team of graduate students and devoted to the research of HDS system, OPC scattering-suppression image, and bidirectional scattering distribution function (BSDF) measurement instrument.

In the field of HDS system, he worked hard in developing high precision simulation model. With aid of these simulation models, he contributed 30+ patents to HDS system. The patents of “enlarging temperature tolerance of HDS system” were presented 2015 TISA Research achievement award and 2014 Y. I. Hsu Technology Invention Award. In addition to technique contributions, Dr. Yu also actively promoted the commercialization of HDS system. By studying the commercial positioning of Inphase and the competitors of HDS system, he pointed out the best product positioning of HDS system is cold- data storage. In conference IWH2013, this viewpoint was recognized by most attendees. In 2014, his proposal successfully persuaded the company Wistron to invest in this future emerging industry. He and the research group transferred the quantitative analysis technology of key components in HDS system to Wistron with 5 million NTD. Since the team's strategy aimed at applying for important patents rather than writing scientific papers, many of the research results were published in the journals three or four years after the patents. Therefore, in addition to 12 journal papers in the field of HDS, there are still many HDS patents that have not yet been published into journal papers.

In the field of OPC scattering-suppression image, Dr. Yu contributed 8 patents. He is the first one who proposed and demonstrated the opposite virtual objective (OV-Obj) and published the study in Scientific report. The invention benefits the applications of forward SHG signal, small particle fluorescent image and 4-pi technologies, e.g., 4-pi confocal microscopy, 4-pi STED, and 4-pi trapping. Besides, he modified the theoretical model of digital optical phase conjugator (DOPC) system that was used worldwide, and published the study in OSA continuum in May 2019.

In the field of BSDF measurement instrument, Dr. Yu contributed 2 patents.  He proposed a screen-image-synthesis (SIS) BSDF meter, which applied a screen to collect large field of light distribution. By changing the rotational angle between the sample and the imaging system, whole field of light distribution could be measured. SIS BSDF meter takes less than 50 minutes to finish the measurement process. In comparison, the conventional scatterometer may take up to 64 hours to obtain data in the same resolution. The first generation of semi-automatic architecture was published on Optics Express in 2012. Now, it has evolved to the fourth generation fully automated machine. Dr. Yu also invented a snap-shot hyperspectrum technique for the SIS BSDF meter that can acquire a two-dimensional 2,500-point spectrum to make the instrument more powerful in the future.

Current Research Areas

The major research interest in holographic data storage is achieving multiplication of storage capacity by enhancing the utilization of M/#. The major research interest in holographic display is using "Digital-optical-phase-conjugation (DOPC) projector" to realistically approach "naked-eyes 3D vedio without display". The major research interest in volume holographic optical element is multiplexing wave-guiding element used in compact lensless microscope. The major research interest in digital optical technique is multimode-fiber endoscope.
