Biography

Ching-Cherng Sun received his BS in electro-physics from National Chiao Tung University in 1988 and his Ph.D. in Optical Sciences, fromNationalCentralUniversity, in Jan. 1993. In 1996, he joined the faculty of National Central University (NCU),Taiwan, and became a Full Professor in 2002, named Distinguished Professor in 2006, and Chair Professor in 2014. He served as the Director of the Innovation and Incubation Center in 2007-2009, the Chair of Department of Optics and Photonics in 2009-2012 and the Director of Optical Sciences Center in 2013-2017. In 2008, he served as the first Director of the Institute of Lighting and Display Science in NCU, which is the first lighting-related institute in Taiwan, and is aimed to support the new technology development in solid-state lighting and display for strong related industry in Taiwan.

Prof. Sun was presented Optical Technology Contribution Award of the Optical Engineering Society of the Republic of China in 2006, the Industry Contribution Award for University by the Ministry of Economic Affair in 2009, the awards for Outstanding Technology to Industry, and the Outstanding Research Award by the National Science Council in 2009, the Outstanding Research Award by Taiwan Information Storage Association in 2012, the Invention Award for Photonics by Far Eastern Y. Z. Hsu Science and Technology Memorial Foundation in 2014, and the Outstanding Research Award by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2015, and the Engineering Award of Taiwan Photonics Society (TPS) in 2018. He is currently a Fellow of the International Society of Optical Engineering (SPIE, 2005) and Optical Society of America (OSA, 2009), was the Vice President (2013-2016) and currently the President of TPS, the Director of Supervisor of Taiwan Information Storage Industry Association, and a Board member of Taiwan Illumination Society. Prof. Sun was the Editor-in-Chief of Optical Engineering (by TPS, 2013-2016), was one of the Chief Editors in Journal of Solid State Lighting (by Springer, 2014-2016), and was an Associate Editor of Applied Optics (by OSA, 2011-2017). He is currently an Associate Editor of OSA Continuum, Editorial member of Scientific Reports, and Crystals.

Prof. Sun has authored and co-authored more than 160 refereed papers and 400 conference papers. He has been invited to give invited talks in more than 65 international conferences. His current major research includes holography, holographic storage, photorefractive devices, optical system, LED solid-state lighting, LED package, optical design.
